Teresa's Teriyaki Sloppy Joes

Our assignment this week for my Eating San Francisco class: cook a delicious meal either solo or with others, then document the process on a platform that supports multimedia, is open to the public and allows visitors to comment on your work. Next, share your meal with others. When done, tweet a link to your project.

This assignment took me a really long time to start. I just could not decide what I should make. Finally, I solved the problem the same way I solve many of my tough ones: I called my mom. Of course, she's a little blunt sometimes, but she tells the truth. I guess I'll just call it tough love.

Here's our conversation (essentially):

Me: Hi, Ma. I have to cook something for my Eating San Francisco class.
Mom: Oh, no!
Me: What do you mean, "Oh no"?
Mom: Well... you're kind of clumsy.
Me: No I'm not. [I actually am]
Mom: You tend to drop things and spill things.
Me: [I actually do] So?
Mom: When you're cooking you have to be careful because someone's actually going to have to eat whatever you're making.
Me: I know. I'll be careful. [I hope]

After I convinced her that I won't end up accidentally burning down the residence hall, she suggested I make sloppy joes. I've always loved the ones she makes for us at home, plus they're so easy that even  can't mess them up.

She told me to buy onions, tomatoes, garlic, ketchup and ground beef.

After careful consideration, I decide to use her idea, but with a little twist. Instead of making regular sloppy joes, I wanted to make teriyaki sloppy joes. It's a spin-off of my mom's favorite burger at Red Robin, the Bonsai Burger. The Bonsai is a teriyaki burger with pineapple rings.

So here is my official recipe for Teresa's Teriyaki Sloppy Joes:

1 pound of ground lean sirloin beef
1/3 cup of chopped onion
1/2 red bell pepper
2 cloves of garlic
1 can of diced tomatoes
7 oz. teriyaki marinade
Salt and pepper to season
8 hamburger buns
8 slices of any cheese

1) Brown onion, pepper and garlic in a medium saucepan over a low flame.
2) Add ground lean sirloin and diced tomatoes.
3) Pour in half of teriyaki and stir.
4) Let simmer for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occassionally.
5) Pour in rest of teriyaki, stir.
6) Let simmer for 2-3 minutes. Add salt/pepper if necessary.
7) Once done, put them in the buns and add cheese.

Now, for the second part of the project: sharing. I made 8 burgers in total.

As a side note: to celebrate Earth Day, we decided to wash our pots and pans with environmentally friendly dish soap. Happy Earth Day and thanks for reading!
